Night O’Hedonism

Last night, four of us got together for an evening of wine and chocolate.  Everyone brought something resulting in the following menu:

Pots de creme with whipped cream
Crepes (cherry compote, Nutella, lemon curd)
Chocolate souffle cupcakes with vanilla whipped cream
Soft goat cheese with pecan crackers
Nuts
Lots of wine

Don’t you wish you were there?
Everything was gluten-free.  Tammy made the [...]

Thankful for Thoughtful Friends

The only part of this I can take credit for are the cupcakes, but this was one amazing dinner. Every gathering has its traditions and specialties, those fabulous dishes and immeasurable hours and love expended. This one was a bit special for a few reasons. A big reason is that every item [...]

Inspiration, with Chicken

Inspiration struck on my walk home from work the other night.  Sliced cooked sweet potatoes. Sliced avocado.  Cooked chicken, shredded.  Onions lightly sauteed. Drizzled with a terriyaki-ish sauce.  It was delish.
I had forgotten how far a simple sauce could go to tie things together and give some zest.  I rarely measure anything, but here’s my [...]

Harvest Dinner

It was the first cool weekend day that demanded fresh bread and homemade soup. We went to the market in the morning, picking up what felt like tons of food. When I could no longer figure out how to carry anything we came home (but not before tasting the chocolate-covered bacon at the Piggery).  [...]

Afternoon Baking

For a while I was fairly content with the gluten-free breads we were buying in the store, but lately I found I just wasn’t satisfied with them anymore. The frozen ones are abysmal, but the Le Garden bread made locally wasn’t too bad.  I was always a bit frustrated that it isn’t vegetarian, and I’ve [...]

Feeling Piggish

I feel a bit guilty, and I don’t want to alienate my vegetarian friends here.  But we’ve had some very good meat lately.
I’ve been vegetarian for much of the last 2 1/2 years.  I think its the right thing for me to do by most calculations, and yet, my body doesn’t always seem to agree.  [...]

Blueberry Cobbler

When I was growing up, my parents had blueberries in the backyard.  They were enclosed in with blue wire fencing, covered with netting.  Mirrors or unused AOL cds hung in between to scare the birds away.  Mom made the best blueberry muffins and blueberry cobbler.  I think of those cobblers each summer as the [...]

And We’re Back

As sometimes happens, a break was unavoidable, but I am still here, and we’re still eating.
In a surpise move, I was inspired to craft something on a recent weeknight.  I had been out of town for 5 days and Joseph took a shot at a bread recipe we hadn’t tried before.  It was an artisan [...]
